Fully licensed drivers may wish to return/continue driving having acquired a disability following illness or accident. Learning a new technique of driving using adaptive driving equipment and/or automatic transmission may be necessary.

They may also wish to overcome cognitive difficulties or restore a confidence in driving. In these cases, an effective process of driving assessment is important. To a greater degree than with a beginner, the process of instruction may be about choosing the most appropriate assistive technology for the client. This can be important when making an effective investment if a car purchase is being made.
