The options currently available to accommodate candidates who require special assistance to take their Driver Theory Test (DTT) are as follows:

  • Availability of extra support e.g.  Extra time, voice over, reader
  • Availability of a reader recorder service whereby a staff member will read the questions and answers to the candidate and record their answer on screen
  • Availability of an inbuilt lexicon on the theory test which offers alternative words for common driving phrases
  • Additional option to request a dyslexic support professional to support candidates during their theory test. The in person dyslexia support provider can read questions and possible answers out loud when asked. They can also replace a phrase or word with an alternative word from the approved list (lexicon).

The reader recorder service consists of a person physically sitting next to a testing candidate and reading the questions and answers aloud when requested to do so by the candidate.  The reader can also record the answers for candidates that cannot use a standard computer or touchscreen computer.

Any special assistance needs to be requested when booking the theory test by calling the Theory Test Carers team on 0818 606 106.

A Driver Theory Test App is available to purchase on www.theorytest.ie which benefits customers and provides assistance in preparing for the test and for candidates to familiarise themselves on the DTT questions and answers, language and format of the test.  The app also has a voiceover which reads out the questions and answers as it does on the day of the test if voiceover option has been selected on booking.
